Visual Art

The Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art is a Liberal Arts Degree with elective flexibility. This degree has a larger percentage of general education and liberal arts elective classes in a relation to studio requirements. This allows students to consider an emphasis, a minor or a double major.

Students who pursue the Visual Art Studio degree will have 23 hours of electives which can be used for a minor or double major. After Foundation and Core studio classes (first level of painting, photography, graphic design, ceramics, and sculpture), students can take multiple level studio classes in any discipline.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Students graduating from Lander University with a degree in visual art demonstrate a general knowledge of art concepts and the ability to apply art techniques in a range of media as outlined by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design standards, including:

  1. familiarity with the works and intentions of major artists/designers and movements of the past and the present, both in the Western and non-Western worlds;
  2. knowledge about the nature of contemporary thinking on art and design and the nature of quality in design projects and works of art;
  3. the ability to make workable connections between concept and media through a variety of art making methods;
  4. the technical skills, perceptual development, and understanding of principles of visual organization sufficient to achieve basic visual communication and expression in an art medium; and
  5. the experience to compile a portfolio showing the development of visual sensitivity.
