Art

Shaping students into professional artists.

If you’re looking for a degree in visual art, it’s because you have a talent for creating. You’re able to solve problems quickly because you think beyond boundaries. You’re more observant than your friends, examining and reflecting on your surroundings closely and carefully. These are skills we value in Lander’s Department of Art, and are also skills highly sought after in today’s workplace.

At Lander, we’ll provide you the space to refine your craft. Our professors are experienced and practicing artists, with artwork regularly featured in exhibits, galleries and publications. They will closely mentor you as you create your own original artwork. You’ll also take courses in a wide variety of media and disciplines, including painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture and design. At graduation, you’ll leave as a professional artist, ready for your future career or for an advanced degree in visual art.

Outside the Classroom

In Lander’s Department of Art, our students’ artwork isn’t confined to the traditional classroom space. Here are a few ways our students have taken their education to new levels:

  • Art Gallery: The Lander Art Gallery hosts multiple exhibits each semester, featuring student artwork at all academic levels, and in a variety of media and disciplines.
  • New Voices: Many art students have had their work displayed in the pages of New Voices, Lander’s official student journal that includes artwork, fiction, poetry and non-fiction from students of various majors.
  • Exhibits and Competitions: Our students enjoy opportunities to showcase their work off campus in art competitions and juried exhibitions, such as the annual Peach Belt Conference Art Exhibition.
  • Travel as Education: Lander’s Department of Art has led scores of unique trips throughout the United States and abroad. Trips give students the chance to experience works of art by well-known and emerging artists, and to create their own artwork while away.
